Q5. How to maintain the tools on a day to day basis ?
Is it necessary or to carry out any preventive maintenance between regrinds ?

Ans. Yes, your tools like Sawblades, Router Cutter's should be removed from the machine at the end of the day and dipped in a solution of water and caustic soda (add 20 grams of caustic soda to a litre of water) for 15 - 20 minutes. This will remove dirt and resins deposited on the tool and will increase the life between regrinds.

Q6. How do I know when the sawblade is due for regrinding ?

Ans. Any of the following

  • When you notice burr on the cut edge.
  • Edges (chipping) breaking in laminated board while cutting
  • When you observe the "increase in Resistance"  during cutting.
  • If the  tips have chipped off or broken during operations (due to presence of foreign particles)

Q7. Can you retip all the tips in a sawblade?

Ans. No, Leitz retips only 25% of the total tips. It is not advisable to retip more than 25% of tips as it becomes uneconomical.

Q8. What should be done when Sawblade wobbles ?

Ans.

  • Ensure that the sawblade is properly clamped with correct size of flanges. Remove any dust, dirt between the flanges and blade while tightening.
  • Check for any play in spindle.
  • Send the sawblade to our service center for check up after checking for the above two points.

Q9. Can I continue to use if one or two teeth are broken.

Ans. It is better to replace the broken tooth immediately, as chances of further damage of other teeths are likely to occur.

Q10. How many regrinds I can get in a Leitz Sawblade.

Ans. About 15-20 regrinds, if blades are sent for service as when you observe the points detailed at Q. No.6.

Q11. How can I send sawblade and other tools for servicing.? What about transport costs ?

Ans. Leitz has arrangements with Blue Dart and certain other courier companies to pick up and deliver the tools for servicing. Courier charges are borne by Leitz subject to a minimum weight of 5 kgs per consignment and for transport by surface mode. Please note this is not applicable to Aluminium cutting sawblade of size above 500 dia and all other tools like Router Cutter, profile cutters etc. For further details please get in touch with our office at Bangalore or your nearest dealer.

Q12. How much time will it take for servicing ?

Ans. Saw Blades are normally serviced and despatched back thru courier the very next working day. Total time involved is transit time (to & fro by courier) plus one day.

Q13. How much does it cost for servicing ?

Ans. Regrinding saw blades cost between Rs.3 to Rs.4.20 per tooth. Retipping costs between Rs.30 to Rs.50 per tip.

Q14. How will the tool perform after servicing ?

Ans. The serviced tool will perform as good as a new tool.

Q15. Is anything other than sharpening done when servicing ?

Ans. The tool geometry is restored to its exacting original specifications. The blades are checked for body tensions. Tips are changed wherever necessary etc. All these go to give you a superior performance from your old blades.

Q16. Is it necessary to provide proper packing while sending the material for servicing?

Ans. Please ensure that your sawblades are properly packed as otherwise the carbide tips will break during transit. Leitz suggests the following:

  • Do not keep one blade over the other.
  • Use individual liner for each blade.
  • Ensure the edges are properly protected by materials foam, thermocole, plastic, etc.
  • Ensure the blades are strapped together.

Q17. Does Leitz service all makes of tools ?

Ans. Yes, However this facility is likely to be withdrawn any time.

Q18. Are more number of teeth required for better finish in a sawblade ?

Ans. This is not so. It depends on the type of work piece material, machine, whether it is for longitudinal  or cross cut of material. Please call our Application Engineer for selection of right type of tools.

Q19. In locally manufactured profile cutters the number of teeth are normally found to be 4 to 8 teeth, where as Leitz advice two teeth for manual feed and 3 to 4 teeth for mechanical feed. Why this difference?

Ans. Leitz offers right type of carbide grade required for the process required unlike local cutters where the quality of carbide used is questionable. In view of the above and perfect balancing of Leitz cutters, two teeth is sufficient for manual feed (say upto 5 mt/min) and 4 for higher machine feed (say above 8 mt/min). Please consult our Application Engineer for more details.

Q20. How do I  ensure optimum use of Leitz tools ?

Ans. By selecting the optimum speed and feed. Please refer chapter on "important information and tables" in LEXICON.

Q21. Is balancing necessary for tools ?

Ans. Yes, balancing is necessary to ensure that the tool does not wobble while running. Wobbling in  turn affects the  component finish, increases the cutting load and affects the spindle bearings.

Q22. I have a Bench Circular Saw. I would like to size  timber sections both along  and across the grain. What Sawblade should I use ?

Ans. To cut along grain it is better to have a Flat tooth (FZ) configuration with lesser number of teeth for e.g., Dia 300mm x 24 teeth. For crosscutting the tooth configuration is Alternate Bevel (WZ) with more number of teeth i.e. Dia 300mm x 72 Teeth.
In case you prefer to use the same sawblade for both operations, the tooth configuration Alternate Bevel (WZ) with less number of teeth would be best. A Sawblade with Dia 300mm x 28 teeth Alternate Bevel (WZ) will work well. If sections are thicker than 2", number of teeth can be 48 for Dia 300mm.

Q23. I have an Altendorf Sliding Table Panel Saw. What are the Sawblades I should use for

  • Scoring
  • Main Sawblade for sizing solid wood
  • Main Sawblade for sizing plain particle board and MDF
  • Main Sawblade for sizing prelaminated particle board
Ans.
  • For scoring, a split type blade with Flat tooth (FZ) tooth (FZ) configuration with Dia 120mm, teeth 12+12 and cutting width 2.8-3.6 is used; for cutting width adjustments on the m/c, Rapido Scoring device is offered.
  • For sizing solid wood, Dia 350mm x 54 teeth or Dia 300mm x 48 teeth may be used as Main Sawblade depending on the thickness of timber sections.
  • For sizing plain particle board and MDF, Dia 300 x 72 teeth with cutting width 3.2mm and tooth configuration Alternate Bevel (WZ) is to be used.
  • Main Sawblade for sizing prelaminated particle board should have a tooth configuration Flat Trapezoidal (FZ/TR) and dia 300mm x 72 teeth x cutting width 3.2mm.

Q24. Is there a Sawblade that can be used on a Circular Saw Machine without scoring attachment to size prelaminated particle boards without chipping ?

Ans. Yes. Sawblades with Hollow tooth-flat tooth (HZ/FA) or flat Trapezoidal (FZ/TR) tooth configurations can be used with good results. Please consult our application engineer for details.

Q25. I am a manufacturer of beadings. What is the thinnest kerf sawblade available in your range so that I can get maximum utilization of timber ?

Ans. The thinnest kerf  Sawblade is 1.3mm. But the maximum diameter would be 180mm for this kerf. For larger diameters the kerf has to be more for maintaining the stability of  the Sawblade. For Dia 200mm Sawblades, the minimum kerf would be 2mm and for Dia 300mm it would be 2.4mm.

Q26. What sawblade should I use for cutting laminate sheets single or in stacks ?

Ans. Sawblades with Flat/Trapezodial tooth configuration is the one suitable for this application. Dimensions are to be selected on the basis of the machine being used.

Q27. I have some specific profiles to be made which are different from the ones shown in the catalogue. Can it be done ?

Ans. There is a high quality Profile Grinder in our Service Centre, which, in combination with CAD, and the help of a Profile Projector specific profiles are  made.
It can be done on the blank profile knives in case of Cutterblocks with replaceable knives. Special brazed solid type cutterblocks can also be made as per sketch or sample piece of profile. The specifications of the Spindle Moulder like HP Rpm, spindle dia, maximum dia of tool possible, are also to be given in the enquiry.

Q28. Can Router Cutters be used on the Portable Drilling Machines or the Pillar Drilling Machines which are used for drilling metals ?

Ans. No. Router Cutters have to work at high r.p.m. of atleast 12000. Drilling machines, especially the ones for metal have low r.p.m. of 2500.

Q29. Can Dowell Drills be used for drilling through holes ?

Ans. No. Dowell  drills are only for drilling blind holes. For drilling through holes, a Through Hole drilling bit is to be used.

Q30. Can Leitz tools be used on all machines ?

Ans. Leitz has specific tools for specific make of machines. These are detailed in the catalogue. If still in doubt, ask our application engineers.
